Apply Four Levels of Interacting
Proficient readers often interact with texts at four levels:
First of all, readers understand what the text is saying. In poems, short stories and plays, literal comprehension implies a concise retailing in the reader’s own words. In an easy comprehension implies the ability to restate the argument.
What are the key points of the text? There may be some points in the text which are only implied (not directly stated). Therefore, readers must decipher the meaning behind the plot.
Readers have to analyze the text objectively. Readers have to look for the flaws. Where did the authors go wrong? Which statement can’t I (reader) accept? Why can’t I accept them?
What is the meaning of the text for me (the reader)? Does the text have any connection with something that I have perceived before? Does the text remind me (the reader) about something? Can it help me to understand anything I didn’t understand before?
